New 2018 Toyota C-HR and Toyota COMS Unveiled at Montreal Auto Show

One week after unveiling the new 2018 Toyota Camry in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show, Toyota showcased two new models at the Montreal Auto Show. The first was the 2018 Toyota C-HR, Toyota’s new subcompact sport utility vehicle that will arrive later this year. The second was the Toyota COMS, the Japanese automaker’s answer to congestion and traffic.

New Toyota COMS Is Perfect for the City

City-dwellers know everything there is to know about congestion, and they probably wished more than once that they had a smaller vehicle that could just dart in and out of traffic. Enter the Toyota COMS, a one-seat electric vehicle with enough room in the trunk for a few grocery bags. It sits on four wheels for car-like stability, but it is also compact enough to fit into any parking space.

The COMS is powered by an electric motor that offers roughly 50 kilometers of range along with a top speed of about 60 km/h. It may not be fast, but again that’s not the point. The idea behind the COMS is to offer an eco-friendly and efficient way of getting around the city. The Toyota COMS hasn’t arrived on the market yet, but Toyota is currently testing the model in a ride-sharing program in Japan and France. It would not surprising that other cities around the world get a few COMS models to try out as well in the near future.

2018 Toyota C-HR Unveiled in Canada

The Montreal Auto Show was also the sight of the first Canadian unveiling of the all-new 2018 Toyota C-HR, Toyota’s newest SUV that is scheduled to arrive on the market this spring. The 2018 C-HR will be Toyota’s smallest and most affordable sport utility vehicle, but that doesn’t mean it won’t offer plenty of features including a host of active safety systems.

Indeed, the 2018 C-HR will offer at no extra charge Toyota’s suite of Toyota Safety Sense P driver assistance technologies that include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection function (PCS w/PD) featuring forward collision warning and Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function (LDA w/SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). The 2018 C-HR also offers 10 airbags, a rear-view camera and hill-start assist at no extra charge.

One engine will be available at launch. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine will deliver 144 horsepower and 139 lb.-ft. of torque and we will be paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). In order to increase driving enjoyment, the C-HR’s gearbox will simulate the behavior of a seven-speed sequential transmission when in Sport mode, thus giving the driver more control over the engine’s performance.
