2018 Toyota Camry Unveiled to the World in Detroit

The 2018 Toyota Camry was one of the most important models unveiled at the North American International Auto Show held a few weeks ago in Detroit.

Featuring a completely redesigned body that is now a lot sportier and a lot more noticeable, combined with three new engines and a re-engineered suspension, the 2018 Camry should appeal to buyers who like to have fun behind the wheel. That said, Toyota promised everyone present at the Camry’s unveiling that it hasn’t forgotten the characteristics that made the previous generation the best-selling vehicle in its segment.

A Sportier 2018 Toyota Camry

The Camry has always been known for its comfort, reliability and efficiency, but the midsize sedan wasn’t considered particularly fun to drive. Built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture and featuring a new chassis to go along with a revised suspension setup, the 2018 Camry aims to change how it is perceived by consumers. There is no question that the new Camry will be a lot sharper in terms of handling and overall driving dynamics.

Its new design is very indicative of the 2018 Camry’s new personality, especially when we look at the SE and XSE trims, two of the five available variants on the redesigned Camry (the other three being L, LE, and XLE). Both the SE and XSE get different front and rear bumpers with a lower diffuser integrated in the latter, a rear spoiler lip, a mesh grill and 19-inch wheels on the XSE, among other distinctive features.

The 2018 Toyota Camry is wider than the model that it replaces, but it is also lower and longer which gives the sedan a powerful stance and increased stability. The seating position in the all-new cabin has been lowered which enhances the driver’s sense of control, and everyone inside the new 2018 Camry will benefit from increased head, leg, and elbow room. The center console and dashboard have been completely redesigned and feature a striking, positively modern design that Toyota says will also be easy to use.

Under the hood, the 2018 Camry gets three new engines starting with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine dubbed Dynamic Force Engine. Paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission, the Camry’s base engine achieves one of the highest levels of thermal efficiency in the world which in turn leads to increased power which doesn’t come at the expense of fuel economy. A 3.5-liter V6 will also be offered along with a new-generation Toyota Hybrid System for the new Camry Hybrid which will be introduced a little bit later. The eight-speed automatic gearbox will be standard with the V6 engine as well while the hybrid will get a CVT continuously variable automatic transmission.

Unparalleled Safety in the 2018 Toyota Camry

Although the 2018 Toyota Camry will without question be sportier and more dynamic, Toyota wants it to also be the safest midsize sedan in its segment. Therefore, the Japanese automaker added its Toyota Safety Sense P suite of driver assistance technologies that include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA); and Automatic High Beams (AHB). Certain trims will also come with standard Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

Obviously, the 2018 Camry is not the first car to offer these technologies, but it will be the only vehicle in its segment to offer such a comprehensive list of active safety systems in every model as standard equipment without any extra charge.
